In 1973 Porsche produced the now legendary 2.7 Carrera RS. Following this in 1974 Porsche released the G-Series 911 producing a Carrera version. For 2 years only (1974 and 1975) the European version had the identical 2.7 litre (210 bhp) Carrera RS engine (type 911/83) and type 915 gearbox as in the 1973 Carrera RS. Apart from the obvious cosmetic changes these 1974 European Carreras are mechanically identical to the 73 Carrera RS with exactly the same performance figures. 0-62 mph was just 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph. The car also weighed the same 1075 kg and was fitted with Aluminium rear swinging arms rather than steel as on the 73 car. These Carreras with the RS engine were never sold in the US, so all US Carreras of this period only had the 175 bhp engine. Porsche only produced a total of 1,036 1973 Carrera RS's and 2,184 European Carreras in 1974 and 1975 with the Carrera RS engine. Of this number only 630 were Targas, making this a very rare car indeed. In total Porsche only produced 3,220 type 911/83 (210 bhp) 2.7 Carrera RS engines. Alone these engines are achieving high values.
This engine had a very thorough rebuild in 2007 and has lots of Torque and very fast! It sounds great too. Since then it has only covered 1000 miles. The history from 1986 onwards shows the car had new heat exchangers in 1999 and only covered around 1000 miles per year in the last 20 years. We have receipts for all the parts used in the rebuild from Autofarm UK. The following parts were replaced: big ends, main bearings, pump drive shaft bearings, piston rings, all seals and gaskets, a new clutch, oil filter, fuel filler plugs and points.
This car is in nice condition and the interior is original, all the instruments work and the front seats were retrimmed in leather in 2007. The targa top has curled up at the front and would benefit from being recovered as this does create wind noise at higher speeds. The gears shift nicely, suspension, brakes and steering are all very good with no knocks or rattles. We have receipts dating back to 1986, including an engine rebuild back then too. We also have a "Porsche Certificate of Authenticity".
The RS engine is an important part of Porsches history and with prices of these Euro Carreras increasing rapidly this car represents excellent value and a great investment for the future. It's also really fun to drive and once behind the wheel it's easy to see why they have such a reputation.
